Unlike polyethylene (PE) or polylactic acid (PLA) coatings that form a separate plastic film on top of paper, aqueous coating integrates at the molecular level — creating a liquid-resistant barrier without any plastic layer.

Traditional PE-coated cups have a thin polyethylene plastic film laminated onto the paper. This film makes the cup non-recyclable with normal paper waste, and research shows it sheds thousands of microplastic particles into hot beverages. Aqueous coating is a water-based mineral compound that forms molecular bonds with cellulose.
