Eco-friendly paper cups: how to tell the real from the greenwash

Most paper cups sold as “eco friendly” in India still contain a plastic lining. A paper cup cannot hold liquid on its own, so something has to line it — and that lining is usually PE (polyethylene) or PLA (polylactic acid). Both are plastics. The only common lining that is not a plastic film is an aqueous, water-based coating.

That single fact is what separates a genuinely eco-friendly cup from a greenwashed one. Everything else — the kraft colour, the leaf printed on the side, the word “natural” — is presentation.

Why “eco friendly” means almost nothing on a label

“Eco friendly” is not a regulated term in India. No standard defines it, no body certifies it, and no penalty attaches to using it loosely. A PE-lined cup printed with a green leaf can legally be sold as eco friendly.

Terms that do mean something are compostable (which requires certification to IS 17088 or EN 13432) and re-pulpable (which is measurable in a lab). Anything else is marketing language.

Three questions to ask any supplier

  1. What is the coating — PE, PLA or aqueous? If they cannot answer immediately, they do not know what they are selling.
  2. Can you send the coating specification? A real supplier has this as a PDF and will send it the same day.
  3. Who holds the test reports, and can I have a copy? Many suppliers display a certification logo without holding the underlying document. A logo is not a certificate.

Common questions

What makes a paper cup eco-friendly?

A genuinely eco-friendly paper cup has no plastic lining. Most paper cups sold as eco friendly use a PE (polyethylene) or PLA (polylactic acid) film to hold liquid — both are plastics. A cup with an aqueous, water-based coating has no plastic film, so it can be re-pulped with ordinary paper waste.

Are eco friendly paper cups actually recyclable in India?

PE-lined cups are not recyclable through normal paper waste streams because the plastic film has to be separated first, and most Indian recycling facilities cannot do it. PLA needs industrial composting, which barely exists in India. Aqueous-coated cups re-pulp with regular paper waste, so they work with the infrastructure that already exists.

Is PLA eco-friendly?

PLA is plant-derived but it is still a plastic — the EU Single-Use Plastics Directive classifies it as one. It only breaks down in an industrial composting facility at sustained high temperature. In a landfill or in normal paper recycling it behaves much like conventional plastic.

How can I check if a supplier’s eco friendly claim is real?

Ask three questions. What is the coating — PE, PLA or aqueous? Can you send the coating specification? Who holds the test reports, and can I have a copy? A supplier who cannot answer all three is selling you a claim, not a product.

Do eco friendly paper cups cost more?

Yes. A PE-lined cup is typically the cheapest option because polyethylene film is cheap to apply. Aqueous coating costs more to apply and the price reflects that. The gap is real and worth understanding before you switch.
